Cannabis 101: How to Roll a Joint or Blunt

In spite of the plethora of concentrates and edibles out there, sources say that smoking is still one of the most popular ways to consume cannabis. That shouldn’t be much of a surprise.

Smoking cannabis is still one of the simplest and fastest ways to ingest marijuana. But that doesn’t mean it’s always easy. Rolling a joint or blunt is just as much an art as it is a science. That’s why in this post, we’re going to cover how to roll a joint and a blunt. We’ll also cover some of our favorite tools like a joint roller and rolling papers.

Before You Start: Rolling Papers and a Joint Roller

Before you even get started learning about how to roll a joint, you should make sure you have the right gear. When it comes to joint papers, thinner papers are best. This will ensure they burn more evenly and prevent “canoeing,” or one side of the joint burning faster than the rest. You also want papers with as few additives as possible. Do your best to find “unbleached” papers.

As far as blunts go, you have two options when it comes to papers. First, you can choose to buy an actual cigar. This is more of a “traditional” method, but it definitely takes more work. Instead, we suggest buying a “blunt wrap.” You can find these at your local head shop or dispensary, and they’ll eliminate the need to unroll a cigar in the first place.

Next up, we have the joint roller. These handy tools essentially automate the rolling process for you. All you need to do is put some cannabis into the roller, feed in a joint paper, and lick the end, and voila! You get a nearly perfect joint every time. While many consider using a joint roller to be “cheating,” we don’t really look at it that way. Use whatever it takes to get the job done!

How to Roll a Joint

All right, now that we have all that out of the way, let’s get down to learning how to roll a joint. Before you start rolling, you’re going to want to make sure your flower is broken up. Use a grinder to do this if possible. The more finely you break up your flower, the easier it will be to roll your joint.

At this point, you can also make a “crutch” or “filter.” This is essentially just a small piece of paper that will keep your flower from falling into your mouth. Take a small piece of paper and fold it up like an accordion. Then, roll the paper into a circle around the accordion. That’s all it takes!

After grinding your weed, take one of your rolling papers. Add some flower into it down the middle, like a hot dog. Then, add your crutch on one end. Take the paper in your fingers, and roll it into a tube shape between them. This will ensure your flower is nice and tightly packed.

Now, it’s time for the final step. Lick along the strip of adhesive gum. Then, tuck the other end across the top of the flower and roll the joint. It definitely helps to have some kind of surface for this part, like a table or a tray. Once your joint is rolled, you can use a poker to pack the flower tightly from the open end. Then, twist the open end closed.

How to Roll a Blunt

After you learn how to roll a joint, a blunt is simple. It’s essentially the same process, just with more flower. Blunts are bigger, so you’ll have to be a little more careful. Blunts also tend to like canoeing more than joints do. As a result, it’s critically important to make sure your blunt is packed tightly. Don’t be afraid to use a poker to pack your blunts perfectly!
