Geography
The City of Kent is demarcated into three distinct regions including West Hill, East Hill, and the Valley. On the east side of the valley, you’ll find downtown, while the rest of the valley is more industrial, dominated by warehouses. The most prominent nearby geographical landmark is Mt. Rainier. The total area of the city is just over 20 square miles, which includes approximately a half square mile of water. On East Hill, you’ll find Lake Meridian, the largest lake in the city. To the north, Kent neighbors Renton and Tukwila, while Auburn is to the south. East of the city is Covington and Maple Valley, and to the west is Des Moines and SeaTac.Transportation
Kent is close to a number of highways and freeways, including I-5, state routes SR-167, SR-516, and SR-99. Traffic can be heavy, particularly during rush hour. Thankfully, Kent residents have access to King County Metro Transit, which allows residents and visitors to easily access several key destinations by commuter bus and the Sounder Commuter rail, including downtown Seattle.History
In the mid-1850s, Europeans and European Americans settled along what was then known as the White River. The original settlements were known as White River, while the town was named Titusville (after the settler James Henry Titus). The area experienced a bit of turbulence, as it was also home to Native Americans who weren’t thrilled with their new “neighbors.” By 1870, the population had reached 277 and steadily grew over the next century. Kent is King County’s second oldest incorporated city after Seattle. Since 2010 when the population was 92,411, the city grew considerably by annexing unincorporated areas. By 2015, the population reached 126,952.Main Attractions
Kent is close to Mt. Rainier and is also home to a robust park system that includes 73 parks, mini-parks, playfields, skateparks, and greenbelts. Sports Illustrated named Kent “Sportstown of the Year” for the state of Washington. Other local attractions include the ShoWare Center, the Hydroplane and Raceboat Museum, the Pacific Raceways, the Great Wall Shopping Mall, the Green River Natural Resources Area, and the historic Mary Olson Farm. Every year in mid-August, Kent hosts the Canterbury Faire. The Western Hockey League Seattle Thunderbirds play ice hockey and the Tacoma Stars play Indoor Soccer at the ShoWare Center.Directions to our Kent, WA City dispensary
