The story of present-day Burien begins in 1864, when French-Canadian settler George Ouellet purchased a homestead here. Twenty years later, Seattle tavern-owners Gottlieb and Emma Burian moved here and formed a small community around their cabin at the southeast corner of Lake Burien.
A misspelling of the couple’s surname meant the township ended up being called “Burien,” but no one seems to have minded that much. Within a few years, a real estate office was drawing large numbers of new residents to the town, and Three Tree Point drew large flocks of visitors from Seattle to sunbathe and swim.
Today, Burien symbolizes a very special kind of Pacific Northwest pride. It’s one that centers on the hard work and innovation of the region’s diverse residents, and the towering evergreen forests and majestic Puget Sound that so define the greater Seattle region’s rugged beauty.
